In addition to the health fair booths, lunch & learns, presentations and local community events that Donate Life Nebraska volunteers participate in year-round, there are some special times throughout the year that focus on organ donation and transplant messaging. Here are few:
National Donor Day
National Donor Day (Sunday, February 14, 2018) is a time to focus on all types of donation—organ, eye, tissue, blood, platelets and marrow—by participating in blood/marrow drives or donor registration events. It is also a day to recognize our loved ones who have given the gift of donation, have received a donation, are currently waiting or did not receive an organ in time.
National Eye Donor Month
This is a great time for cornea recipients or donor families to share their stories with the media and with local civic groups. The Lions Eye Bank of Nebraska is a member organization of Donate Life Nebraska.
National Donate Life Month
Special attention is focused on organ, eye and tissue donation during the month of April, with extra media coverage and special events, both nationally and locally, such as Donate Life Blue and Green Day, and Donate Life Linking Hands Events. Donate Life Nebraska 5K and Heroes Walk
The Donate Life 5K and Heroes Walk presented by Nebraska Organ Recovery will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Lewis & Clark Landing in Omaha. Learn more and register now.
National Minority Awareness Day
August 1st is National Minority Awareness Day. The nationwide observance aims to educate minorities of the desperate need for organ, eye and tissue donors within multicultural communities nationwide. It also draws special attention to minorities, who make up 56% of the more than 118,000 men, women and children on the national organ transplant waiting list.
Donor Sabbath Weekend
National Donor Sabbath, generally celebrated on the second weekend in November, is an interfaith celebration of life and thanksgiving, and a special time for congregations across America to learn about the critical shortage of organs and tissue. Donate Life Nebraska provides free information to churches and synagogues throughout the state to share with their members.
